USCIS to help spread “citizenship corners”

Exciting development for the NAC: The United States Citizenship and Immigrant Services (USCIS) Office of Citizenship signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) to spread the “citizenship corner” concept to the 9000 libraries across the country! This is modeled on what the New Americans Campaign piloted successfully in Los Angeles. Seeing the partnership with public libraries become a national model is a tremendous accomplishment for the NAC. USCIS specifically said that having the NAC’s naturalization service providers partnered with the libraries has been key to success. USCIS is very interested in targeting libraries in other NAC sites and we will work together to accomplish this.

Our Impact

  • The Campaign has nearly doubled the number of naturalization applications completed in NAC sites by since the first year through over 2,100 naturalization workshops and clinics.
  • Over 136,000 citizenship applications completed since July 2011.

    Saved aspiring citizens and their families nearly $118 million in legal and application fees.
  • Over 2,100 naturalization events hosted, including info sessions, trainings and group application workshops.
  • Adopted scalable technology. MP3 players, Google Voice, and Virtual Private Network (VPN) services are being used to enhance naturalization service delivery.
  • Expanded the New American Workforce (an effort to provide naturalization assistance within corporations) which has partnered with nearly 100 businesses across the nation, ranging from hotels in Miami to American Apparel in Los Angeles.
  • Deployed CitizenshipWorks, an online tool, across the NAC in multiple settings and languages. This quarter the NAC also began to integrate the new CitizenshipWorks mobile phone app into services, and are poised to pilot CitizenshipWorks 2.0 with a New York partner.
  • Were instrumental in inspiring the US Citizenship and Immigration Service to support the Citizenship Corners initiative.
  • Created innovative partnerships with public libraries, school districts, universities, social service agencies, and employers, all of which yield not only greater numbers of applicants but also greater awareness of the naturalization process.
  • Deployed a large-scale volunteer recruitment program through an e-learning course.

    Reached diverse communities. Local partners consistently outreach and provide culturally competent and language-appropriate services.
